Point Walter Reserve
Sir Captain James Stirling named this site Point Walter after his oldest brother Walter Stirling
Compared to other areas in Perth, the land around Point Walter was slow to be developed due to its relative infertility. In 1830,
following the original Swan River colony settlers, the second wave of colonists received land grants; however, only two chose to stay &
develop property here.
One of these men was Alfred Waylen, arriving from South Africa, who was granted 36 acres here and whose plans included building a
tavern and establishing a ferry service for patrons. As part of this, Waylen cut a channel in the spit at Point Walter which was heavily
used as a stopping point between Fremantle and Perth, despite constantly silting.
Although suffering a number of misfortunes, this industrious land owner Alfred Waylen continued to graze cattle in the area around
Alfred Cove for many years, even after leasing the tavern and moving to Bull Creek in an effort to establish a river port there. However
in 1895, Point Walter was sold to the government as a reserve. Today there are many land features bearing Alfred Waylen’s name
which signify his long standing history in the area.
